While cleaning my closet today, i came across a book i bought a few weeks ago called "Why a daughter needs a dad" by Gregory Lang. I had originally intended for it to be a gift for my dad, as a "I know we've had our differences, but i love you" kind of gesture. After briefly flipping through it in the store, i bought it. But when i brought it home and looked through it some more, i fell in love with it. I decided not to send it to him, and instead keep it for myself. I don't know why, and i don't know how to explain this, but i guess i felt like by keeping the book, in a way, it might be like i received the book as a gift, myself.. and i know that sounds so dorky, but there were so many things in there that i felt were so true. For the first time in my life i finally realized what i missed out on by not having my father around to behave like a "dad." And i found myself wishing that i had had my father around to teach me these things.. that apparently dads are supposed to teach their little girls. Anyways, i'm getting sappy. I've decided that i'm going to send the book to him.. but i want to remember some great quotes from the book so i'm copying them here. Some of them, i already know but think they're worth repeating anyhow. The rest, well, maybe if i copy them here.. it'll rub off on me some day.

A Daughter Needs a Dad..

..to teach her to believe that she deserves to be treated well.

..so she will know what it is like to be somebody's favorite.

..to tell her truthfully that she is the most beautiful of all.

..to answer the questions that keep her awake at night.

..to make the complex simple and the painful bearable.

..to be the standard against which she will judge all men.

..to tell her that all is not hopeless even when she feels it is.

..so that she will have at least one hero who will not let her down.

..to tuck her in at night.

..to help her take the risks that will build her confidence.

..to learn what she should expect from her husband.

..to teach her to preserve her dignity during difficult times.

..to teach her what it means to always be there.

..to teach her that a man's strength is not the force of his hand or his voice, but the kindness of his heart.

..to help her try again whenever she fails.

..so that when no one else is there for her, she can close her eyes and see him.

..to think highly of her when no one else will.

..to hold her as she cries.

..to teach her to stand up for herself.

..to teach her the importance of being a lady.

..to calm her when she is stressed by her challenges.

..to show her how to fix things for herself.

..to show her that true love is unconditional.

..to teach her that ignorance is not an excuse for anything.

..to teach her how to focus her mind in the midst of distraction.

..to tell her all she needs to know about boys.

..to show her that all boys are not like the one who hurt her.

..to teach her how to recognize a gentleman.

..to stand with her on the day she marries the man she hopes will be just like her father.

..to teach her when to be cautious.

..to teach her to learn from her experiences.

..to teach her what kind of man to choose to be the father of her children.

..to help her become the best mother she can be.

..to help her find her way in life.

..to help around the house so that her mother will have time to spend with her, too.

..so she learns that men can be trustworthy.

..because without him she will have less in her life than she deserves.
