I think it's kinda cool how when you learn something.. someone else comes along in need of the exact knowledge you just recently acquired. It's also kinda cool how in teaching them, you kinda relearn it all in the process. Here's a conversation that occured between my 16 yo sister and I that served just that purpose for me.

shel: casey i really need ur help
shel: i tried danyo but he's not much help
shel: please cus this is kinda a 911 call
[20 minutes later]
hamakosan: what's up
shel: FINALLY!
hamakosan: i wasn't at my desk
hamakosan: and i didn't have the sound on
hamakosan: what's up
shel: okay remember how i told u that i like jacob right? well i liked him from the beginning of the year but i didn't tell anyone cus i have a "friend" who likes every boy sumones else likes when she finds out that they like sumone
shel: but then she found out
shel: and then SHE started liking him
shel: these past couple days she's been like "omg did u just see that? jacob just winked at me. he's been doing that lately. and he's been flirting with me a lot" but i didn't say anything and THEN yesterday she has the nerve to come up to me and ask me "oh shelby can u do me a BIG favor?" and i was like "depends" and she was like "could u ask jacob if he would go out with me?"
shel: and i just looked at her
shel: i couldn't even say anything
shel: i couldn't believe she actually asked me that
hamakosan: dude, why you gotta act like a wuss. just tell her NO and walk away
shel: and then i was like "uh i dono if i could."
shel: and then my cousin jo (who knows how i feel about him and supposedly doesn't like marie) was like "oh i'll do it marie!"
shel: WAIT I'M NOT DONE YET
hamakosan: hehe ok
hamakosan: <-- shushing up
shel: and marie was like "oh okay! thanx jo!"
shel: so i just stood up, (we were eating lunch) and i walked out
shel: so then yah during 7th pd. yesterday, jo wrote a note to jacob asking him. so she gave it to him and he opened it and then efrin (his friend. who is a nut) grabbed it frum jacob and read it and was like "marie likes jacob!" and then jacob grabbed it frum efrin and was like "she like me?!"
shel: and it seemed like he was real happy
shel: but he never gave her an answer
shel: and what i was worried about today was if they do go out, how am i gonna feel seeing them together?
shel: k i think that that's it
hamakosan: well, for one..
shel: wait no it's not
hamakosan: lol ok. continue
hamakosan: <-- shushing again
shel: see, even with me knowing that, it's like i told my fren brandee, if he said no to her, what makes me think that he would say yes to ME? and she was like "what makes u think he WOULDN'T say yes to u?" and i was like "becus. marie is skinnier than me, darker than me, has nicer clothes than me, and is prettier than me." and then she was like "uh uh. hello no marie isn't prettier than u. and she is TOO skinny. and she does NOT have nicer clothes than u. she always wears the same thing over and over."
shel: and i was like "maybe but she's still darker than me"
shel: k NOW that's it
shel: so what were u gonna say?
hamakosan: lol
hamakosan: ok
hamakosan: you sure you pau?
shel: oh hush. yes i'm pau
hamakosan: ok. now keep quiet cuz this is going to take a while
hamakosan: so just sit there, hush.. and let this sink in

hamakosan: My advice would be to drop the marie girl. She ain't your friend. If she WAS your friend, she wouldn't have done that to you. BUT if you decide it's too complicated (small school and all) to stop being her friend.. then just be civil to her, and realize that she can't be trusted (so be careful who you tell your secrets to) I KNOW you didn't tell her, but OBVIOUSLY someone else you told, told her.
hamakosan: 2.
hamakosan: If you're upset with someone. LEARN TO SPEAK UP! i can't tell you how important this is shel. If you continue to go through life being a sucker.. you're not going to get anywhere and you'll always be unhappy. People will take from you as much as you're willing to give. If you're upset with someone, if they did something to hurt you, or if they ask you to do something you don't want to do. DON:T WAIVER. SAY NO. There's nothing wrong in saying NO.
hamakosan: 3.
hamakosan: If Jacob likes Marie, there's nothing you can do about it. So there's no point in crying over it. However, if it bothers you so much (and they're not together yet), get some courage up to talk to him or write your own letter to him (if you're too scared to say it to his face). But just as a rule of thumb.. guys like girls who are confident. Get some confidence in yourself and just say something to him.
hamakosan: 4.
hamakosan: If he DOES like her and decides to go out with her.. then it's his loss. I would think that marie is a spoiled, selfish person.. totally opposite of you. If she's opposite of you, and if jacob likes her, then that means you're not his type anyway. and why waste your energy on someone who isn't even your type or you, his?
hamakosan: 5.
hamakosan: If someone doesn't love you back.. that means they're not deserving of you in the first place. GET THAT? If you like someone that much, and they happen to not like you back in the same way, or as much as you like them.. then they're not worth your time. You deserve to be with someone who will love you and adore you just as much as you love and adore them.
hamakosan: 6. You're not fat. UGH why do girls always think that they are?! and guys don't really like girls that are too skinny. Look at Paris Hilton. she's a freak of nature. i'm pretty sure it hurts to hug her.. her bones would probably jab you. You're also very pretty. But you know what though? one day you'll realize that beauty can only carry you so far.. it's what's in your head and heart that counts. and i realize i'm sounding like a freakin Full House episode but just deal cuz i'm watching it at the moment. So as i was saying. Guys (mature ones anyway) like a girl with something to say. an opinion. brains. sure it doesn't hurt if she looks cute, but you are so you got that base covered. Just work on school and the rest will fall into place.

shel: k i'm just gonna kinda butt in once. i don't think i'm fat. i just said that she was skinnier than me

hamakosan: Things happen when you least expect it. I realize this is high school.. but contrary to popular belief, it's NOT the end of the world. You WILL have a life after high school and some day it won't matter who the hottest cheerleader is dating this week or that marie dated a guy you liked when you were in the 11th grade. One day, you will look back on this and laugh your arse off at how silly this all is. But back to what i was saying. Don't stress over boys too much. Concentrate on school.. college is the more fun scene anyway. =)

hamakosan: again, i repeat. no one likes a girl that's too skinny. you're not hideous and hopefully one day you'll realize you're pretty darn cute. i realize clothes is important in high school but try to take comfort in the fact that boys don't NOTICE what girls wear. trust me on this. as for the skin color thing well.. yeah, i understand you on that one.. it sucks, and that's the crap you gotta deal with there but if it's an issue with him then he's not worth your time anyway

hamakosan: you need to realize sooner rather than later.. that you should be able to COMPLETELY be yourself around a guy. You should be able to say whatever you want, be dorky, look uncute.. and have him think you're amazing in spite of it all. THAT'S the kind of guy you want. NOT one that you'll worry about being pretty enough, or dark enough, or whatever for. You want someone that wants YOU.
hamakosan: and that's the end of my lecture. class over. i expect a ten page essay on my desk by friday morning.

hamakosan: and if it turns out he doesn't like you, it's his loss, no sweat. so move on
